Honesty, integrity & experience

Repairing an older appliance can absolutely be worth the money—and not just for sentimental reasons. Here’s the real case for it, in plain terms:

1. Older appliances are often built better
Many older models were made with sturdier parts (more metal, fewer fragile electronics). A simple repair can give you years more use, while some newer appliances are designed to be replaced, not fixed.

2. Repair is usually cheaper than replacement
A $150–$300 repair beats spending $800–$2,000 on a new appliance—especially if the fix addresses a known, common failure point and the rest of the machine is solid.

3. You avoid the “new appliance surprise problems”
New appliances often come with:

  • Shorter lifespans

  • Proprietary parts

  • Expensive repairs once out of warranty
Older appliances tend to have widely available, cheaper parts and simpler diagnostics.

4. Better for the environment
Repairing keeps large items out of landfills and reduces the energy and resources used to manufacture and ship a new appliance. It’s one of the easiest ways to lower your environmental footprint.

5. You already know how it performs
You know its quirks, capacity, noise level, and reliability. No learning curve, no disappointment because the “upgrade” actually cleans worse or breaks sooner.

6. Repairs can extend life dramatically
Replacing a motor, pump, belt, or control board can realistically add 5–10 more years to an appliance—especially washers, dryers, refrigerators, and ovens.

When it may not be worth it

  • Repair costs exceed ~50% of replacement cost

  • The appliance has repeated major failures

  • Safety issues (gas leaks, electrical hazards)

  • Extremely poor energy efficiency compared to modern models

Rule of thumb
If the appliance is under 15 years old, the repair is under half the cost of replacement, and the rest of the unit is in good shape—repairing usually makes sense.

If you want an expert opinion, tell us the appliance and roughly how old it is, and we can help you decide whether repair or replacement is the smarter move.
